Revisiting the Quasi-Biennial Oscillation as Seen in ERA5. Part I: Description and Momentum Budget

چکیده
The dynamics and momentum budget of the quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO) are examined in ERA5 reanalysis compared with those ERA-I. Because ERA5's higher spatial resolution it is capable resolving a broader spectrum atmospheric waves allows for better representation wave-mean flow interactions, both which crucial importance QBO studies. It shown that QBO-induced mean meridional circulation, mainly confined to winter hemisphere, strong enough interrupt tropical upwelling during descent westerly shear zones. Since advection tends damp QBO, wave forcing responsible downward propagation maintenance QBO. half required provided by resolved easterly regimes. Planetary-scale account most zones small-scale gravity (SSG) wavelengths shorter than 2000 km remainder. SSG fields very similar ERA-I but be substantially stronger ERA5. contributions various equatorially-trapped modes documented Part II.

Kinetic Energy and Quasi-biennial Oscillation
The modulation of the vertical flux of kinetic energy to the stratosphere by the pressure-work effect at 100 mb is compared with variations in the hemispheric kinetic cnergy, the horizontal momentum and heat transports a t “low” latitudes, and the tropical zonal wind and temperature for the lower stratosphere. It is deduced that the variation of the vertical flux of geopotential is in phase wit...
متن کاملRevisiting the Influence of the Quasi-Biennial Oscillation on Tropical Cyclone Activity
The statistical relationship between the quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO) and tropical cyclone (TC) activity is explored, with a focus on the North Atlantic. Although there is a statistically significant relationship between the QBO and TCs in the Atlantic from the 1950s to the 1980s, as found by previous studies, that relationship is no longer present in later years. Several possibilities for ...
متن کاملConstraints on Wave Drag Parameterization Schemes for Simulating the Quasi-Biennial Oscillation. Part I: Gravity Wave Forcing
Parameterization schemes for the drag due to atmospheric gravity waves are discussed and compared in the context of a simple one-dimensional model of the quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO). A number of fundamental issues are examined in detail, with the goal of providing a better understanding of the mechanism by which gravity wave drag can produce an equatorial zonal wind oscillation. The gravit...
متن کاملNote concerning the Period of the Quasi-biennial Oscillation
The period of the quasi-biennial oscillation is examined through the use of a harmonic procedure which allows one to examine periods of interest without omission of any data. On the basis of 8, and 5th years, of mean-monthly zonal-wind and temperature data in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres, respectively, it is found that: (1) A quasi-biennial oscillation in zonal-wind exists in the tropo...
متن کاملVariation with Longitude of the Quasi-biennial Oscillation
Daily data at 16 stations along five latitudes from 13"N. to 33"s. were carefully examined a t the 50-, lo&, and 500-mb. levels for evidence of longitudinal phase progression of the quasi-biennial oscillation (&BO). At 50 mb. there is evidence of west to east progression although there are many irregularities and much uncertainty. The phase dates differ by days a t low latitudes. At 100 and 500...
